Youth CineMedia

is a nationally recognized program that utilizes state-of-the-art technology to help teach teenagers the fundamentals of digital video, music production, photography and other multimedia. Youth CineMedia (YCM) also provides area youth with the means to create inspiring, thought-provoking media that promotes dialogue and social change, as well as the training, knowledge and relationships that help foster expression and confidence.

YCM focuses its outreach on underserved communities, with an emphasis on youth from low-income or newly-immigrated families, or those with an unfortunate history of below average school performance, substance abuse or involvement in the juvenile justice system.

Originally founded in January 2003, as part of the Latino CineMedia Film Festival, Youth CineMedia has currently worked with over 400 youth from throughout Santa Barbara County. The training includes classes in Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, Soundtrack, LiveType and additional software. Students learn how to operate digital video and still cameras as well as lighting and audio equipment.

Youth are also taught music production, writing, custom framing and silk-screen printing. After the training period, students create various media projects and have the opportunity to exhibit their creations at local film screenings, photo exhibits and other events. Students also earn money and develop their professional skills while working with and developing our Youth CineMedia clientele.

Osiris Castañeda is the founder and director of Youth CineMedia, and co-founder of the Latino CineMedia Film Festival. He was a producer for the award-winning documentary, Zapatista, a Cannes Film Festival "Emerging Filmmakers Series" selection. He has directed distinguished actors such as Edward James Olmos, Daryl Hannah, and Zach de la Rocha, lead singer of the band Rage Against the Machine. Mr. Castañeda has been a Santa Barbara resident since 1990 and a proud father of two.
